Albert Augustsson was a passenger on Titanic.

Early life[]

Albert Augustsson was a native of Kråkeryd Södergård, Hallaryd, Småland, Sweden. He was born on October 10, 1889. His father was August Petersson, a crofter married to Johanna Petterson. He was their eldest child. At least 3 brothers were born after him: Johan in 1891, Håkan in 1894 and Axel in 1900.

For three years, he had been an apprentice to a blacksmith at home in Kråkeryd. He had about 500 kroner with him when he had decided to go on a trip to America to provide for his poor family and together with his traveling party had bought a ticket in Copenhagen. Paul Andreasson, Nils Johansson, Carl Jonsson and Olga Lundin.

Titanic[]

On April 10, he and his compagnians were aboard the impressive new ocean liner. They joined the ship in Third Class, although Nils had his sweetheart Olga upgraded to Second Class because she felt unwell and seasick.

On April 14, Titanic had a collision with an iceberg late at night. The damage sustained meant that seawater could enter the ship and the Captain started an investigation. After he and the shipbuilder had confirmed she would sink they started an evacuation shortly after midnight on April 15.

Of the group, only Carl Jonsson and Olga Lundin made it off the ship in a lifeboat. Albert and the other men that had traveled with him died after the ship sank.

His body was not recovered.

After his death[]

His parents, August and Johanna Petersson, received SEK 875:52 (£48) from the charity fund and on January 12, 1914 compensation of SEK 1,908 (£100). The fact that they received so much in damages was probably due to the fact that the parents were relatively poor. His mother didn’t take the loss very well and it had made her ill. They had counted on Albert to do his best to find opportunities in America so he could support them financially.
